It sits on the border between Panama and Colombia. This land acts as a natural bridge between North and South America. However, it is also a very difficult place to travel through. The area is famous for being one of the most inhospitable places on Earth.

It is made of thick forests, high mountains, and large river basins.

The land changes depending on which side of the border you are on. The Colombian side has the Atrato River delta. This area creates flat marshlands that are at least 10 kilometers wide. The Panamanian side is very different because it is much more mountainous.

In Panama, the terrain goes from low valley floors to high peaks. The tallest point is called Cerro Tacarcuna. Huge trees, such as the ceiba, grow in these dense forests.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. The indigenous Embera-Wounaan and Guna peoples make up much of the population. In 1995, there were about 8,000 people living among five different tribes.

Many years ago, the Kingdom of Scotland tried to start a colony here. They called it "New Caledonia" in 1698. This plan failed because of disease and poor planning. This event caused great financial trouble for Scotland.

There is no road that goes all the way through the Gap.

The Pan-American Highway is a huge system of roads across the Americas. It breaks at Yaviza in Panama and starts again at Turbo in Colombia. This gap is about 100 kilometers long. People have tried to build a road there in the 1970s and 1990s. These plans failed due to costs and worries about the environment. Some people also want to protect animals from diseases like foot-and-mouth disease.

Today, the Darién Gap is a very busy path for people moving north.

Since the 2010s, many people have used this route to reach the United States border. In 2022, there were 250,000 people crossing the area. By 2023, that number grew to more than 520,000 people. Traveling here is very hard and can be dangerous. Travelers must deal with heavy rains, flash floods, and wild animals. Many people use small boats or walk through the thick jungle.
