It is a huge network of roads that spans about 19,000 miles. This path connects 14 different countries together. It starts in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in North America. The road travels all the way south to Ushuaia, Argentina.

This massive system helps people travel between many different lands. It is a very important way to connect the Americas.

There is one big part where the road stops.

This area is called the Darién Gap. It is a dense rainforest between Panama and Colombia. No roads go through this thick forest. Because of this, North and South America are separated. Drivers cannot simply drive from one to the other. Many people choose to send their cars on a cargo ship. They use these ships to cross the gap between countries.

People did not always plan to build a highway.

In 1884, the U.S. Congress even planned a railroad instead. This idea changed at a meeting in 1923. At that time, cars were starting to replace trains. Many countries wanted a way to move goods by car. On July 29, 1937, many nations signed a special agreement. They promised to build the highway as fast as they could.

This agreement helped the project move forward.

Building the road happened in different stages over many years.

The first part went from Laredo, Texas, to Mexico City. Later, the Inter-American Highway was built to Panama City. In 1941, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started a road near Panama. They did this to make sure people could reach the Panama Canal. Mexico became the first Latin American country to finish its part in 1950.

Today, the road touches many places like Ecuador and Peru.

Even though it is one big system, it looks different everywhere.

In the United States, most of it is part of the Interstate Highway System. For example, Interstate 35 runs from Texas to the Canadian border. In some places, like New Mexico, Interstate 25 is called the Pan-American Freeway.

In Canada, the roads are not officially marked as part of the highway. In South America, you might see special signs for the route. It is like a giant web of paths that ties many lands together.
