For much of the 20th century, it was the largest international air carrier for the United States. People often saw it as the unofficial national carrier. It was known for luxury and glamour in air travel. The airline used a blue globe logo, often called "The Blue Meatball."

Many people remember its white pilot caps and its "Clipper" aircraft names. It helped make flying across the world feel exciting and special.

This airline worked by building a huge web of flight paths.

It started with small mail and passenger flights. Later, it used flying boats that could land on water.

These planes allowed the airline to reach many new places. Pan Am also used jumbo jets like the Boeing 747. These big planes could carry many more people at once. They could also fly much longer distances without stopping. This made traveling between continents much faster for everyone.

Pan Am began in 1927 with a small goal.

Two U.S. Army Air Corps majors, Henry "Hap" Arnold and Carl Spaatz, helped start it. They wanted to deliver mail between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba.

Later, a leader named Juan Trippe took charge of the airline. He helped the company grow across Central and South America. He even traveled with Charles Lindbergh to negotiate new flight rights. This helped the airline expand its reach to many different countries.

Many important numbers show how big Pan Am became.

In 1970, the airline flew 11 million passengers. These travelers visited 86 different countries. Pan Am flew to every continent except Antarctica. The airline also introduced the first American jetliner in 1958. It used advanced technology like computerized reservation systems to manage flights. Its main hub was the Worldport at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

Even though Pan Am stopped flying in 1991, it is still a cultural icon.

The airline faced hard jobs and more competition in the 1970s. It eventually declared bankruptcy and closed its doors on December 4, 1991. However, its famous brand and logo were still very well known. In 1998, a company called Guilford Transportation Industries bought the name and imagery. They even used the Pan Am logo for their own business. Today, people still look back at Pan Am as the golden age of flying.
