The Darién Gap is a remote and roadless region of rainforest.

It sits on the international border between Panama and Colombia. The area covers the Darién Province in southern Panama. It also covers the northern Chocó Department in Colombia. This region acts as a natural land bridge between North and South America. However, it is also one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth.

The terrain is extremely difficult for humans to navigate.

The geography of the Gap is highly diverse. The Colombian side is dominated by the Atrato River delta. This creates flat marshlands that are at least 10 kilometers wide. The Tanela River also flows toward the Atrato. On the Panamanian side, the landscape is much more mountainous. The terrain rises from low valley floors to high peaks. The tallest point is Cerro Tacarcuna in the Serranía del Darién.

Massive trees like the ceiba grow in these dense forests.

Indigenous groups inhabit much of the region. The Embera-Wounaan and Guna peoples are the primary inhabitants. In 1995, there were about 8,000 people living among five different tribes. The largest settlement is La Palma, which is the capital of Darién Province. It has roughly 4,200 residents. Other population centers include Yaviza and El Real de Santa María. Most economic activity involves small-scale farming, cattle ranching, and lumber. However, criminal enterprises like drug and human trafficking are also widespread.

The Darién Gap creates a massive break in the Pan-American Highway.

This highway system runs the length of North and South America. The road ends at Yaviza in Panama. It resumes at Turbo in Colombia. This gap is approximately 100 kilometers long. People must use small boats or pirogues to travel by water. Otherwise, hiking is the only option. This is very strenuous and dangerous due to flash floods and heavy rains.

Travelers also face venomous wildlife and tropical diseases.

Efforts to build a road have failed for many decades. Planning began in 1971 with American funding. This was halted in 1974 due to environmental concerns. Another attempt began in 1992. By 1994, a United Nations agency reported that a road would cause extensive environmental damage. Many groups oppose a road to prevent deforestation. They also want to protect indigenous cultures. One major concern is preventing foot-and-mouth disease. This disease could enter North America if a road were built. North America has not seen this disease since 1954.

The history of the region includes many significant events. The Guna people moved westward due to conflicts with the Spanish. In 1513, Vasco Núñez de Balboa reached the Pacific Ocean.

In 1698, the Kingdom of Scotland attempted a colony called the Darién scheme. They named their settlement New Caledonia.

The project aimed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. However, the expedition suffered from poor planning and disease. It also faced a blockade by Spanish forces. The colony was abandoned in 1700. This failure caused massive financial ruin for Scotland. It even influenced the union with England in 1707.

In recent years, the Gap has become a major migration route. Since the 2010s, hundreds of thousands of people have traveled through it. Most migrants are from Venezuela and Haiti. They are traveling north toward the United States border.

The number of people crossing has increased rapidly. In 2022, there were 250,000 crossings. In 2023, that number grew to more than 520,000 people. This is more than double the previous year's total. The lack of medical support and law enforcement makes this journey very perilous.
