Pacific–Antarctic Ridge

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Pacific-Antarctic Ridge is a huge part of the ocean floor.

It sits in the South Pacific Ocean. This ridge is a divergent plate boundary. This means it is a place where two plates pull apart. The Pacific plate and the Antarctic plate move away from each other here. This movement makes the sea floor grow.

The ridge goes from the Challenger fracture zone toward New Zealand. It follows a path toward the Macquarie Triple Junction.

A fracture zone is a place of low gravity on the seafloor. Many of these zones sit along the ridge. Some names include the Menard and Raitt zones. The Udintsev zone is also there.

A long line of underwater mountains sits near the ridge.

This is called the Louisville Ridge. It is the longest chain of mountains in the Pacific. It formed from a hotspot. A hotspot is a place where hot magma rises up. The Pacific plate slid over this hot spot to make the ridge.
