The East Pacific Rise is a long rise on the ocean floor.

It sits in the Pacific Ocean. This rise is a divergent boundary. This means the ground moves apart in two directions. As the plates move, new ground is made.

Some parts move very fast. Near Easter Island, the ground moves over 15 centimeters each year. This is the fastest rate in the world! Other parts move much slower.

Deep in the water, you can find black smokers. These are hydrothermal vents. They are like chimneys that let out hot water.

These vents help make ore deposits on the sea floor. They also help unique sea creatures live. These animals do not use sunlight. Instead, they use a way of life called chemosynthesis. This means they get power from chemicals. It is a very busy place under the sea.
