It was created by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport for the BBC. The show follows four colorful characters who live in a bright, grassy land. These friends have special antennas on their heads and screens on their bellies. The characters use these screens to watch films of real children. People all over the world love the show because it is colorful and fun. It has even won many BAFTA awards for its great work.

Each episode follows a special way of working. The Teletubbies live in an earth house called the Tubbytronic Superdome. They interact with strange tools like the Voice Trumpets, which rise from the ground. There is also Noo-Noo, a blue vacuum cleaner that helps clean the house. Sometimes Noo-Noo is a "Naughty Noo-Noo" when he sucks up blankets or toast.

Every episode also includes a magical, whimsical event that happens unexpectedly. The day ends when the Sun Baby sets and the characters say goodbye.

Andrew Davenport and Anne Wood made the show to help preschoolers. Davenport was interested in astronauts and the Apollo 11 moon landing. They wanted to make something for children living in a world with more technology. They looked for a special place to film that had a bowl-like shape. They finally found a farm in Wimpstone, Warwickshire, to use as their set.

This farm became very famous because of the show.

The show became a huge success very quickly after it began in 1997. By December 1997, the theme song reached number 1 on the UK charts. It sold over one million copies and stayed in the top 75 for 32 weeks. The characters are Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and Po. Tinky Winky is the largest and is purple with a triangle antenna. Dipsy is green, and Laa-Laa is yellow with a curly antenna. Po is the smallest and is red with a bubble-shaped antenna.

Teletubbies is part of a much larger world of toys and games. In 1997, the dolls were the top-selling Christmas toy in Britain. People even camped outside stores to buy them. By October 2000, the brand had sold over £1 billion in merchandise.

There were also video games and interactive ActiMates toys. Even though the original show ended in 2001, a new version was made later. This reboot ran for 120 episodes and aired on channels like Nick Jr. in the United States.
