It follows a group of friends who solve spooky mysteries. The team includes four teenagers named Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy. They travel with a talking Great Dane named Scooby-Doo. They drive around in a brightly colored van called the Mystery Machine.

The characters face creatures like ghosts and zombies. Most of these monsters are actually people in costumes. These villains use costumes to hide their crimes. The gang often uses clever traps to catch them. This fun cycle of mystery and discovery makes the show special.

Solving a mystery follows a specific way of working. First, the gang arrives at a spooky location. They encounter a creature that is scaring local people. Next, the teenagers split up to search for clues. They often get chased by the monster during this time. Fred sometimes builds a complex trap to catch the villain.

Finally, they unmask the creature to show it is just a person. Sometimes the creature is actually an innocent robot or an owner. However, the show always proves that the spooky things are not real.

Many people helped create this beloved world. Writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears developed the idea. They worked with artist Iwao Takamoto to design the characters. Takamoto designed Scooby-Doo with a sloped back and a double chin.

This was different from a real prize-winning Great Dane. The show was first made for Hanna-Barbera. It was created because parents wanted less violence in cartoons. Executives wanted shows that were safe and fun for children. This led to the birth of a new kind of mystery show.

Scooby-Doo has a very long history on television. The first episode aired on CBS on September 13, 1969. It was called "What a Night for a Knight."

The show moved to ABC in 1976. Many new versions have been made since then. Some shows feature the characters as children, like "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo." Other reboots appeared on Cartoon Network between 2010 and 2018. The most recent series is "Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?" which started in 2019. In 2013, TV Guide ranked it as the fifth-greatest cartoon ever.

This show connects to many other stories you might know. The teenagers were partly based on characters from a show called "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." Shaggy's personality is very similar to a character named Maynard. The stories are also like the "Famous Five" books by Enid Blyton. Both involve four kids and a dog solving mysteries. Scooby-Doo even influenced other cartoons from the 1970s. Shows like "Josie and the Pussycats" and "Speed Buggy" used similar ideas. It remains a classic part of animation history.
