It made many cartoons that people loved for years. The studio worked from 1957 until 2001. It became one of the most successful animation companies in the world. Some people even compared it to Disney because it was so big. Its characters appeared on TV, in movies, and on many products. This studio helped shape how many people saw cartoons on television.

Making these cartoons was a huge job for many people. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera were the main leaders. Hanna supervised the animation while Barbera worked on the stories. They had many talented staff members like character designer Iwao Takamoto. Music was also a big part of their work. Hoyt Curtin was the person in charge of the music. They used many different artists to bring their characters to life. This teamwork helped them create many different kinds of shows.

The story of the studio began long before 1957. Hanna and Barbera met at the MGM studio in 1938. They worked together on the famous Tom and Jerry cartoons. These stories followed the funny adventures of a cat and a mouse. They made 114 of these cartoons together. Seven of those films even won Oscars between 1943 and 1953. In 1957, MGM closed its cartoon studio. This led the two men to start their own company. They partnered with George Sidney to make it happen.

Hanna-Barbera created many iconic characters and shows. The Huckleberry Hound Show was their first big hit on NBC. In 1960, they released The Flintstones on ABC. This show was special because it was the first animated series in prime time. It was set in a fictional Stone Age with cavemen and dinosaurs.

They also made Yogi Bear and The Jetsons. Another very famous show was Scooby-Doo, which started in 1969. This show followed four teenagers and a dog solving mysteries. The studio was so busy it was called the "General Motors of animation."

Over time, the studio changed hands many times. Taft Broadcasting bought the company in 1966 for $12 million. Later, the Turner Broadcasting System purchased it in 1991. Turner used the old cartoons to help start Cartoon Network in 1992. This gave the classic characters a new place to be seen. After William Hanna died in 2001, the studio joined Warner Bros. Animation. Even though it is part of a bigger company now, the name still matters. People still use the Hanna-Barbera name for its classic shows.
