Making cartoons involves many careful steps. Barbera was a talented sketch artist who could write funny "gags," or jokes. His partner, William Hanna, was great at timing and building stories. Together, they combined these skills to bring drawings to life. They would plan out how a character moved and how a joke would land. This teamwork allowed them to create many different kinds of shows. They even used a coin toss to decide who would be the president of their company each year.

Joseph Barbera's journey began in New York City. He was born in 1911 to parents who had moved from Sicily, Italy. As a young boy, he showed a talent for drawing in the first grade. He even won boxing titles while he was in high school in Brooklyn. In 1929, he saw a Disney film that made him want to work in animation. He worked many different jobs, like a bank employee, to support his dream. Eventually, he moved to California in 1937 to work at a big studio called MGM.

At MGM, Barbera met William Hanna, and they became a famous team. They are most well-known for creating Tom and Jerry. This series follows a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry. The two characters are always in a chase filled with action. This specific cartoon series was very successful and won seven Academy Awards. Even though their boss did not always want more cat-and-mouse stories, the pair kept creating them. They directed more than 114 short films featuring these two characters.
