Hanna-Barbera was a major American animation studio and production company.

It operated from 1957 until it was absorbed into Warner Bros. Animation in 2001. The studio was famous for producing a massive variety of iconic animated series. These characters appeared in television shows, movies, and on many consumer products. Because of its huge output, the studio became one of the most successful in the world. It was even seen as a rival to Disney.

The production process relied on a highly skilled team of specialists. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera were the primary founders and leaders. Hanna focused on supervising the animation, which is the movement of the drawings. Barbera handled the stories and the pre-production stages. They worked with many experts, such as character designer Iwao Takamoto. Music was also a vital component of their shows. Hoyt Curtin was the person responsible for providing the musical scores. This collaborative system allowed them to create many different series quickly.

Many different types of shows emerged from the studio over the decades. Some were short-form series like The Huckleberry Hound Show, which debuted in 1958. This show was the first cartoon to win an Emmy Award. Other shows were longer or had different themes, such as the mystery-based Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!

This series debuted in 1969 and featured four teenagers and a dog. The studio also produced action shows like Jonny Quest and various spin-offs. They even created animated commercials for products like Pebbles cereal.

The history of the studio began with the partnership of Hanna and Barbera. They first met in 1938 while working at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) animation unit. Together, they created the famous Tom and Jerry cartoons. They produced 114 of these shorts, which focused on a cat and a mouse. Between 1943 and 1953, seven of these films won Oscars for Best Short Subject. When MGM closed its cartoon studio in 1957, the duo decided to start their own company. They partnered with producer George Sidney to form H-B Enterprises.

Hanna-Barbera reached incredible levels of productivity during its peak years. At one point, the studio was called "The General Motors of animation." This was because they produced nearly two-thirds of all Saturday-morning cartoons in a single year. In 1960, they released The Flintstones on ABC. This was a major milestone because it was the first animated series to air in prime time. It was set in a fictional Stone Age and ran for six seasons. It remained the longest-running prime-time animated show until The Simpsons broke its record in 1997.

The studio underwent several changes in ownership throughout its history. In 1966, Taft Broadcasting acquired Hanna-Barbera for $12 million. This acquisition was briefly delayed by a lawsuit regarding the value of company shares. Later, in 1991, the Turner Broadcasting System purchased the company. Turner used the studio's massive library of old cartoons to help launch the Cartoon Network in 1992. This gave classic characters a new way to reach audiences.

After William Hanna passed away in 2001, the studio ceased to exist as an independent entity. It was fully integrated into Warner Bros. Animation. However, the Hanna-Barbera name remains very important today. The brand is still used for marketing, branding, and copyright purposes. It connects modern viewers to the classic animated properties that defined television for many years.
