It was created by animator Tom Ruegger. The show was produced by Amblin Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television Animation. The series functions as a variety show. It features a large cast of different characters. Most episodes use a format of three short mini-episodes. These segments are often joined by bridging segments. The show uses satire, musical numbers, and character catchphrases. It also includes references to historical figures and events. This variety makes the series engaging for many different viewers.

The production of an episode involves many complex steps. First, writers develop stories and musical numbers. Some jokes are even improvised during recording sessions. Next, voice actors record their lines in a studio. For example, Rob Paulsen voices Yakko and Pinky. He records his lines for four hours per episode. Then, animators create the visual movements. The series used 10,000 more drawings than other animated shows. Animation was completed in several countries. These included Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. This global effort helped bring the characters to life.

The series features many distinct character types. The main characters are the Warner siblings: Yakko, Wakko, and Dot. They are three cartoon stars from the 1930s. In the show, they escape from the Warner Bros. Water Tower.

Other characters include Pinky and the Brain. They are genetically altered laboratory mice. They constantly plot to take over the world. There is also Slappy Squirrel, an octogenarian squirrel. She is often paired with her nephew, Skippy. Other groups include The Goodfeathers. These are three pigeons based on characters from the film Goodfellas.

The history of the show began with Steven Spielberg. He offered Tom Ruegger a chance to develop a new series. Ruegger found inspiration while walking around the studio lot. He saw the real-life Warner Bros. Water Tower in Burbank, California. This building became the home for the Warner siblings. Ruegger also used his three sons as inspiration for their personalities. Spielberg helped select the final cast of characters. He approved or rejected 25 different character concepts. Only four or five sets of characters were eventually chosen for the show.

Animaniacs achieved significant success during its original run. It premiered on Fox Kids in 1993. It later moved to The WB in 1995. The series ran until November 14, 1998. It produced a total of 99 episodes. The show was very popular among children. It was the second-most popular children's show for certain age groups. The series won eight Daytime Emmy awards. It also won a prestigious Peabody award. The production budget for the first season was nearly $26 million. This was about $1 million more than Tiny Toon Adventures.

Music plays a vital role in the Animaniacs experience. Steven Spielberg wanted an original score for every episode. The main composer for the series was Richard Stone. He used a large orchestra for the music. This orchestra consisted of 29 to 32 players. The music styles change to match the different segments. For example, the Goodfeathers segments use styles from films like The Godfather. The theme song for Slappy Squirrel uses Dvořák's Humoresques. Musicians sometimes score 45 to 50 ending gags in just two hours. This musical variety adds depth to the comedy.

The show connects to many broader cultural topics. It was developed following the Children's Television Act of 1990. This law required children's programming to include educational content. The writers included history and geography in their comedy. A famous example is the song "Yakko's World." This song helps viewers learn about different places. The show also uses satire to comment on society. It references many famous films, musicians, and historical figures. This allows the show to reach both children and older audiences.
