ALF was a popular American television sitcom that aired on NBC from 1986 to 1990.

The show centered on an extraterrestrial visitor named Gordon Shumway. His nickname, ALF, is an acronym for "Alien Life Form." The series blended science fiction with the daily life of a suburban family. It explored themes of culture shock, loneliness, and finding belonging in a new world. The show became a significant part of 1980s pop culture through its unique character.

The story follows a specific sequence of events that brings the characters together. Gordon Shumway follows an amateur radio signal from Earth to our planet. This signal leads him to crash-land his spacecraft into a garage in California. He is discovered by the Tanner family, a middle-class household living in the San Fernando Valley. To protect him, the family hides him from the Alien Task Force. This is a specialized branch of the U.S. military that hunts for extraterrestrials. They also must hide him from their nosy neighbors, Trevor and Raquel Ochmonek.

The series features a diverse cast of characters with distinct roles. Willie Tanner, played by Max Wright, is a social worker and the father. He often struggles to balance his cautious nature with ALF's chaotic behavior. Kate Tanner, played by Anne Schedeen, is the mother and a former art history major. Their children include Lynn, a teenager, and Brian, a younger son who becomes ALF's sidekick.

Even the family pets play a role, such as the cat, Lucky. The show also features supporting characters like the Ochmoneks and Kate's mother, Dorothy.

The production of the show involved complex technical work. ALF was primarily a puppet performed by co-creator Paul Fusco. In scenes where the character appeared with a full body, Michu Meszaros performed the role. Other assistants, such as Lisa Buckley and Bob Fappiano, helped with the puppetry. This method was extremely demanding for the cast and crew. Because the puppet required constant attention, there was often high tension on set. Some actors even found the technical requirements of working with the puppet to be frustrating.

The history of the character includes a tragic backstory. It is eventually revealed that ALF's home planet, Melmac, was destroyed. The planet exploded due to a nuclear war. ALF survived this catastrophe because he was a member of the Melmac Orbit Guard. This position kept him away from the planet during its destruction. In one episode, ALF even tries to convince the President of the United States to stop nuclear programs. He wants to prevent Earth from suffering the same fate as Melmac.

Over its four seasons, the show produced 97 episodes. This total includes three special one-hour episodes: "Try to Remember," "ALF's Special Christmas," and "Tonight, Tonight." When these hour-long episodes were divided for syndication, the total count reached 100 episodes. The series concluded on an unresolved cliffhanger. To provide a sense of closure, a 1996 television film titled "Project: ALF" was released. This film follows ALF after he is captured by the United States Air Force.

The legacy of ALF continues through various media rights and development plans. Although a planned reboot by Warner Bros. in 2018 was canceled, interest in the franchise remains. In 2022, Shout! Studios acquired the distribution rights to the ALF titles. They aim to develop new content related to the series. Additionally, the company Maximum Effort joined in 2023 to help develop new material. The show remains a notable example of how puppetry can create a lasting television icon.
