ALF was a popular American television sitcom that aired on NBC.

The show followed the adventures of a funny alien. His real name was Gordon Shumway. He came from a planet called Melmac. His nickname, ALF, stands for "Alien Life Form."

The story begins when Gordon follows a radio signal to Earth. He crash-lands his spacecraft in a garage in California. There, he meets the Tanner family. The Tanners are a middle-class family living in the San Fernando Valley. They decide to hide him from the military and nosy neighbors. Although he causes a lot of chaos, the Tanners grow to love him as a family member.

Making the show was a very hard job for the actors.

ALF was a puppet performed by Paul Fusco. Because the puppet was difficult to use, it caused tension on the set. Max Wright, who played the father Willie, sometimes found the work very demanding. In scenes where ALF appeared with a full body, Michu Meszaros performed the role. Other assistants helped move the puppet to make him look real. The actors had to work closely with the puppet to make the scenes look natural. This required a lot of skill and patience from everyone involved.

The series was created by Paul Fusco and Tom Patchett. Producer Bernie Brillstein first saw Fusco perform with a puppet character. At first, the producer was not sure about the idea. However, he soon thought the character was hilarious. He decided the character was strong enough to lead a whole show. The series ran for four seasons from 1986 to 1990. It included 97 episodes in total. Some episodes were special one-hour versions. These included "ALF's Special Christmas" and "Tonight, Tonight."

There are many interesting details about the characters and their lives. Willie Tanner was a social worker who loved scale model trains. His wife, Kate, studied art history at Amherst College. Their daughter, Lynn, eventually went to California State University, Northridge. Their son, Brian, was often ALF's sidekick. The family even added a new baby named Eric during the third season. ALF had a very sad history, though. He revealed that his home planet, Melmac, had exploded due to nuclear war. He only survived because he was part of the Melmac Orbit Guard.

Even after the show ended, the story of ALF continued in different ways. In 1996, a television film called "Project: ALF" was released. This film served as a finale for the franchise. Later, companies like Shout! Studios worked to bring new ALF content to people. The show is remembered for how it mixed science fiction with family life. It showed how an alien could fit into a normal home. It also showed how people can find friendship in unexpected places. Even though ALF was from another world, his feelings were very human.
