It tells the story of a large blended family living together. A blended family is formed when two people marry and bring children from previous relationships. This concept was very unique for television in the late 1960s. Most other shows at that time focused on single-family households. The series became a major part of American culture over many years. People still recognize the Brady family today because of its lasting popularity.

The show follows Mike and Carol Brady in a large house. Mike is an architect who has three sons named Greg, Peter, and Bobby. Carol marries Mike and brings her three daughters, Marcia, Jan, and Cindy, into the home. The children all take the Brady name. The family also includes a housekeeper named Alice Nelson. A dog named Tiger lives with the family as well. The setting is a big two-story house in a Los Angeles suburb.

Stories in the show focus on the lives of the children. In the first season, the episodes look at how the kids adjust to one another. They deal with sibling rivalry and gender rivalries. The show also covers typical teen concerns like school grades and dating. Other topics include self-image, responsibility, and getting along with others. The show avoided political topics, such as the Vietnam War. It focused on being family-friendly entertainment for everyone.

Sherwood Schwartz created the show after reading about marriage trends. He saw that many marriages involved children from before. The series aired on ABC for five seasons. It ran from September 26, 1969, until March 8, 1974. While it was not a huge hit during its first run, it became very popular later. This happened through syndication, which is when shows are rebroadcast. Many children and teenagers grew to love the series during these reruns.

The show's success led to many other projects. There were several reunion films and spin-off series created later. These included The Brady Bunch Hour and The Brady Girls Get Married. In 1995, a satirical film called The Brady Bunch Movie was released. The show is also famous for its opening title sequence. It used a special grid technique to show the cast members. This was so popular that people called it the "Brady Bunch effect."
