It aired on ABC from September 24, 1977, to May 24, 1986. The show focused on the lives of a ship's crew and various passengers. These characters experienced romantic, dramatic, and humorous adventures while at sea. The series was a major part of ABC's successful Saturday-night lineup. It aired alongside another popular show called Fantasy Island until 1984.

The show's success helped define a specific era of television broadcasting.

Each hour-long episode followed a unique anthology format. This format used three distinct storylines running at the same time. Each storyline was written by a different set of writers. One plot was typically a straight-ahead comedy for the crew. The second plot usually followed a romantic comedy style. The third plot was often the most dramatic and serious.

These stories focused on crew members, passengers, or the interactions between them. Sometimes, the storylines would cross over in rare, special moments.

The series was set aboard the Pacific Princess. This was a real-life cruise ship owned by Princess Cruises. The show was primarily filmed on sets in southern California. Production took place at 20th Century Fox Studios for the first five seasons. Later seasons moved to Warner Hollywood Studios. The creators also filmed occasionally on the actual vessels. The show used iconography from Princess Cruises, such as their logo. The characters referred to the owners as "the line" or "the company."

Development of the series began with three television movies. The first pilot was based on a nonfiction book. Jeraldine Saunders wrote the book about her life as a cruise director. The series was created by Wilford Lloyd Baumes. Aaron Spelling served as the executive producer for the show. Spelling was a famous producer for Four Star Television and ABC. He produced many successful series from the 1960s through the 1990s.

The main cast provided a sense of continuity for viewers. Gavin MacLeod played Captain Merrill Stubing throughout the series. Bernie Kopell played the ship doctor, Adam "Doc" Bricker. Ted Lange played the bartender, Isaac Washington. Lauren Tewes played the cruise director, Julie McCoy.

Fred Grandy played the purser, Burl "Gopher" Smith. MacLeod, Kopell, and Lange appeared in every episode and special. Grandy appeared in every episode but missed the specials due to political campaigning.

A major attraction was the high level of celebrity guest stars. The show featured thirty-two past or future Academy Award winners. One notable guest was Janet Gaynor, the first Best Actress winner in 1929. This guest-starring method was very successful for the network. While not the first to use this format, the show's success led to comparisons with other series. Other shows like Supertrain and Masquerade drew attention because of this style. The series was also nominated for four consecutive Golden Globe Awards.

The show's setting expanded as the seasons progressed. Early episodes focused on the West Coast of North America. The ship visited ports like Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, and Mazatlán. Later, episodes featured cruises to Europe and East Asia. The crew traveled to the Aegean Sea and Italy. Other trips included Scandinavia on the Royal Viking Sky. The show even featured a cruise to Australia in 1981.

This variety allowed the show to reach many different audiences.

The musical elements of the show were also very distinct. The theme song was composed by Charles Fox. Paul Williams wrote the lyrics for the song. Jack Jones sang the opening for the first eight seasons. Dionne Warwick sang a different arrangement for the final season. The show was also one of the few hour-long series to use a laugh track. In the final season, a dance troupe called the Love Boat Mermaids was added. They performed choreographed routines to current hits during the episodes.
