The Golden Girls is a celebrated American sitcom created by Susan Harris.

It aired on the NBC network from September 14, 1985, to May 9, 1992. The series follows four older women sharing a home in Miami, Florida. These women navigate their "golden years" through humor and friendship. They face the daily challenges of aging and single life together. The show is considered a classic example of a sitcom that has aged well. It continues to attract new fans even in the 21st century.

Most episodes follow a specific, comforting structure. The plot often begins when one or more women face a problem. These dilemmas might involve family members, romantic interests, or difficult ethical choices. To resolve these issues, the women gather around a kitchen table. They frequently meet late at night to discuss their troubles while eating desserts like cheesecake or ice cream. During these conversations, a character usually tells a story from her own life to provide perspective. However, Rose Nylund often tells nonsensical stories, and Sophia Petrillo tells outrageous, made-up tales.

The ensemble cast features four distinct and memorable characters. Bea Arthur plays Dorothy Zbornak, a practical and sarcastic substitute teacher from Brooklyn. Betty White portrays Rose Nylund, a kind and somewhat naive woman from St. Olaf, Minnesota.

Sophia moved in with the others after a fire occurred at her retirement home, Shady Pines. Each actress brought a unique energy that defined the group's dynamic.

The concept for the series emerged from a surprising moment in 1984. During an NBC television special, two actresses performed a parody skit titled "Miami Nice." This skit mocked the idea of older people living in Miami. NBC executive Warren Littlefield found the geriatric humor amusing. He encouraged producers Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas to develop a pilot script. While the network initially wanted a show about women in their 40s, Susan Harris chose to focus on women in their 60s. This decision addressed a demographic that had never been centered in television before.

Throughout its seven seasons, the show achieved massive commercial and critical success. It produced 180 half-hour episodes and ranked in the Nielsen top 10 for six seasons. The series earned two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series. It also won three Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. A rare historical milestone occurred when all four lead actresses won a Primetime Emmy Award. This achievement makes it one of only four sitcoms in history to reach this level of recognition.

The series concluded in May 1992 after Bea Arthur decided to leave the show. The hour-long finale featured Dorothy marrying Blanche's uncle, Lucas Hollingsworth. While Sophia planned to move to Atlanta with Dorothy, she ultimately stayed in Miami with her friends. This conclusion led to a spin-off series titled The Golden Palace. The finale was a major television event, watched by 27.2 million viewers. As of 2016, it remained the 17th-most watched television finale in history.

Critics and historians continue to recognize the show's lasting impact on culture. In 2013, TV Guide ranked it as the 54th best series of all time. The Writers Guild of America also included it on their list of the 101 best-written TV series in 2014. The show's ability to blend humor with the realities of aging remains significant. It connected the themes of friendship and independence to a wide audience. By focusing on the lives of older women, it changed how television portrayed aging and community.
