As a producer, he managed the complex process of bringing stories to life on screen. He holds a significant record as the most prolific television producer in American history. Spelling earned 218 credits as either a producer or an executive producer. An executive producer is a person who oversees the high-level production of a show. His work shaped the landscape of entertainment for several decades.

Spelling's career followed a path from acting to writing and finally to producing. He began by appearing in small roles in films and television series. His early acting credits included the film *Vicki* in 1953. He also appeared in famous shows like *I Love Lucy* and *Gunsmoke*. In 1956, he transitioned into writing when he sold his first script, "Twenty Dollar Bride." He later gained experience writing teleplays for the series *Zane Grey Theater*. This series ran from 1956 to 1961 and included 149 episodes. Spelling wrote 20 of those teleplays while also working as a producer.

His development as a producer involved creating new formats for television. While working at Four Star Television, he produced a show called *Burke's Law*. This program was his first major success and introduced a new style. It pioneered a format that used multiple guest stars in a single episode. This technique became a standard in the industry and was later used in shows like *The Love Boat*. By mastering these production methods, Spelling changed how television series were structured.

Spelling's professional life was defined by several key business partnerships. In 1966, he formed Thomas-Spelling Productions with comedian Danny Thomas. This company operated until 1972 when the last season of *The Mod Squad* aired. Following this, he entered a long partnership with producer Leonard Goldberg. Together, they formed Spelling-Goldberg Productions, which lasted until 1986. Through these companies, he founded Spelling Entertainment. These entities allowed him to produce a vast array of successful programs.

His production catalog includes some of the most recognizable shows in television history. He produced hits such as *Charlie's Angels*, *Dynasty*, and *The Love Boat*. He also created the long-running family drama *7th Heaven*. Some of his series featured his own family members, such as his daughter Tori Spelling in *Beverly Hills, 90210*. His work spanned many genres, from the comedy *The Love Boat* to the drama *Melrose Place*. This variety helped him reach many different types of viewers.

Spelling's personal life was as notable as his professional success. He was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1923 to Russian Jewish immigrants. His father, David Spelling, was a tailor who changed the family name from Sperling. During his youth, Spelling faced severe anti-semitic bullying at school. This trauma caused him to lose the use of his legs for one year. He eventually made a full recovery and later served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1991, he built a massive 123-room home in Los Angeles known as "The Manor."

Spelling's legacy is marked by both industry honors and personal philanthropy. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978. In 1996, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. He was also a generous donor to medical causes. In 1983, he received the NAACP Humanitarian Award for funding a heart transplant for a 21-year-old. Spelling died on June 23, 2006, at the age of 83. His influence continued even after his death, as his shows were honored at the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
