Baywatch is an American drama television series centered on the lives of lifeguards. These professionals patrol the beaches of Los Angeles County, California, and later, Hawaii. The show explores both the professional duties and the personal challenges of its characters.

While saving people from drowning is a common plot, the series also covers diverse dangers. These include shark attacks, earthquakes, and even serial killers. The show captures the specific excitement of the beach lifestyle through its many dramatic stories.

The series utilizes a large, rotating ensemble cast to tell its stories. This structure is similar to long-running soap operas, where actors frequently enter and exit the show. David Hasselhoff served as the primary star and appeared in 206 episodes, including the pilot. Other notable cast members include Jeremy Jackson, who appeared in 117 episodes, and Michael Newman, who appeared in 109. Pamela Anderson was another major figure, appearing in 77 episodes. By the conclusion of the 11-season run, not a single member of the original cast remained in the series.

The production of the show underwent several distinct stages and changes. It began as a series titled ACES, which stood for Aquatic Corps for Emergency Service. The creators eventually chose the name Baywatch, inspired by the rescue boats that patrol Santa Monica Bay. The show debuted on NBC in 1989 but faced immediate cancellation after one season. This happened because the production studio, GTG, went out of business and could no longer fund the high costs. However, the series was revived in 1991 for the first-run syndication market.

History shows that Baywatch eventually became a massive global phenomenon. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, it reached a weekly audience of over 1.1 billion viewers. In the United Kingdom, the show reached 12.85 million viewers during a single week in February 1990. The series was sold to many nations, including Canada, Germany, Australia, and the Philippines. This immense popularity led to a spin-off called Baywatch Nights and a feature film in 2017. It also became a frequent subject for parodies and pop culture allusions.

One reason for its success was its specific audience appeal. Research from focus groups suggested the show resonated deeply with women aged 18 to 34. Approximately 65 percent of the total audience was female. Executive producer Douglas Schwartz noted that the lead characters were perceived as strong and independent. These women were portrayed as heroic lifesavers who were equal to their male counterparts. This dynamic helped the show maintain its massive international following for many years.

In 1999, the series underwent a major retooling and moved its setting. Producers originally considered a move to Australia, known as Baywatch: Down Under. However, local residents in Avalon Beach, New South Wales, successfully campaigned to ban production there. Instead, the producers moved the show to Hawaii due to significant financial incentives. This new version, known as Baywatch: Hawaii, ran for two seasons until 2001.

Under this new arrangement, the production had to hire local crews and film on location.

The cost of producing the Hawaiian episodes was quite high for the time. Each episode cost between US$870,000 and $1.1 million to create. The agreement required that 60 percent of the budget be spent within Hawaii. This period marked a significant shift in the show's visual style and cast. While the L.A. era featured many long-term stars, the Hawaii era brought in a new group of actors. Despite the high production values, the Hawaii version was eventually canceled due to poor ratings.
