These heroes patrol the sunny beaches of Los Angeles County and Hawaii. The show focuses on the professional jobs of the lifeguards. It also looks at their personal lives and relationships. Most stories involve dangers found at the beach. Characters often save people from drowning in the ocean. They also face scary events like shark attacks or earthquakes. The show makes viewers feel the excitement of the beach lifestyle.

The show uses a large group of actors called an ensemble cast. Many actors rotate in and out of the series over time. This is similar to how long-running soap operas work. David Hasselhoff is the main star and appeared in 206 episodes. Other famous actors in the cast include Pamela Anderson and Jeremy Jackson. By the end of the 11 seasons, no original cast members remained. The show's success came from many different people. Many viewers, especially women aged 18 to 34, loved the strong female leads. These women were heroic and equal to the men.

The idea for the show came from a real event. Creator Gregory J. Bonann was working as a lifeguard. He saved two children during his duty. He originally wanted to call the show ACES. He later chose Baywatch because it was the name of rescue boats. The show first appeared on NBC in 1989. It was actually canceled after only one season. This happened because the production studio went out of business. However, the show was brought back for syndication in 1991.

Baywatch became a huge global phenomenon after it returned. It reached a massive weekly audience of over 1.1 billion viewers. It was very popular in many different countries. In the United Kingdom, it reached 12.85 million viewers in one week. The show was sold to places like Canada, Germany, and Australia. It even reached the Philippines and Mexico. Because it was so famous, people often use it for parodies. It also led to a spin-off called Baywatch Nights. A feature film was also made in 2017.

In 1999, the show changed its setting and name. It became Baywatch: Hawaii and ran until 2001.

The producers moved the show to the islands for many reasons. They wanted to find new ways to film the series. Hawaii offered special financial incentives to the production team. They had to hire local crews and film on location. Each episode cost between $870,000 and $1.1 million to make. This new version helped the show reach a new era of fans.
