He achieved massive fame as a teen idol for playing Dylan McKay on the Fox drama series Beverly Hills, 90210. He performed this role from 1990 to 1995 and returned to it from 1998 to 2000. His popularity reached such heights that an autograph session in August 1991 led to a riot. Approximately 10,000 teenage girls attended the event at The Fashion Mall in Plantation. The situation became so intense that Perry had to leave after only 90 seconds. Later in his career, he became well known for playing Fred Andrews on the CW series Riverdale.

Perry's path to stardom required immense persistence and manual labor. After graduating high school, he moved to Los Angeles in 1984 to pursue acting. To support himself, he worked various odd jobs. These included working for an asphalt paving company and a doorknob factory. His professional acting career began with a difficult period of rejection. He auditioned for 256 different jobs before he finally secured his first role in 1988. His earliest television work involved daytime soap operas. He appeared in one episode of Loving and ten episodes of Another World.

His early life was rooted in the state of Ohio. He was born in Mansfield on October 11, 1966. He was the second of three children born to Ann Perry and Coy Luther Perry Jr. His father worked as a steelworker, while his mother was a homemaker. Perry grew up in Fredericktown, where he served as the school mascot, the Freddie Bird. His family experienced significant changes during his youth. His parents divorced in 1972, and his father passed away from a heart attack in 1980.

Throughout his career, Perry explored many different types of media and genres. He transitioned from teen dramas to more mature roles in films and series. He starred in the film 8 Seconds in 1994, playing the character Lane Frost. He also appeared in the science fiction film The Fifth Element in 1997. Perry was also an accomplished voice actor for animated series. He provided voices for characters in The Simpsons, Johnny Bravo, and The Incredible Hulk. He even participated in a dramatized audio Bible project called The Word of Promise, where he voiced both Saint Stephen and Judas Iscariot.

Perry's work extended to the live stage and international productions. In 2001, he appeared on Broadway in a revival of The Rocky Horror Show. He played the role of Brad Majors in that production. He also performed in London in 2004, appearing in a production of When Harry Met Sally ... alongside Alyson Hannigan. His filmography includes a wide variety of roles, from the prison drama Oz to the post-apocalyptic series Jeremiah. His final feature film performance was in the 2019 movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This role earned him a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

In his later years, Perry used his platform to support health awareness. Following a colonoscopy in 2015, he discovered pre-cancerous growths. This experience led him to become an advocate for colorectal cancer testing. He also focused on his family, creating a will that named his two children, Jack and Sophie, as his sole beneficiaries. At the time of his death, he was engaged to Wendy Madison Bauer.
