Taxi was a highly successful American television sitcom that aired from 1978 to 1983. It first premiered on ABC on September 12, 1978. Later, the show moved to NBC, where it ran until June 15, 1983. The series focused on the lives of employees working the night shift at the fictional Sunshine Cab Company. Most of the action took place in the company's fleet garage located in Manhattan. The show is widely regarded by critics as one of the greatest television series ever produced.

The show utilized an ensemble cast to tell stories about people working unsatisfying jobs. Alex Reiger, played by Judd Hirsch, served as the compassionate and level-headed core of the group. While others saw driving as a temporary job, Alex viewed it as his permanent profession. Bobby Wheeler, played by Jeff Conaway, was a vain actor struggling to find success. Tony Banta, played by Tony Danza, was a kind-hearted Vietnam veteran and a boxer with a losing record. Elaine Nardo, played by Marilu Henner, was a single mother who worked as a receptionist at an art gallery.

The cast also included several unique characters who added depth to the garage setting. Reverend Jim Ignatowski, played by Christopher Lloyd, was an aging hippie minister who had been burnt out by drugs. The drivers helped him pass his exams to become a cabbie. Latka Gravas, played by Andy Kaufman, was the wide-eyed mechanic from an unnamed foreign country. He often spoke in a heavy accent or used invented gibberish. Another key figure was Louie De Palma, played by Danny DeVito. Louie was the despotic dispatcher who worked from a caged-in office. He was known for bullying the drivers and acting without morals.

Louie De Palma became one of the most famous characters in television history. In 1999, TV Guide ranked him as the number one greatest TV character of all time. Danny DeVito won the role after a very bold audition where he threw the script on the table. While Louie was often abusive and contemptuous, he occasionally showed a helpful side. For instance, he once helped bolster Elaine's confidence after a hairstylist gave her a garish makeover. The character was complex, showing both cruelty and moments of unexpected support for the workers.

The production of Taxi involved a team of creators with a history of success. James L. Brooks, Stan Daniels, David Davis, and Ed Weinberger created the series. These men had previously worked together on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The show was a massive critical and commercial success. It received 34 Primetime Emmy Award nominations during its run. The series won 18 Emmy Awards in total. This included winning the award for Outstanding Comedy Series for three consecutive years. Because of its popularity, the show has remained in syndicated reruns for decades.

While the show was a comedy, it was also known for tackling very serious and dramatic life issues. It explored complex themes such as drug addiction, single parenthood, and divorce. The writers also addressed social issues like racism, sexual harassment, and even the threat of nuclear war. Characters often dealt with the pain of lost dreams or the struggle of being victimized. Some episodes focused on specific conditions like blindness, obesity, or dissociative identity disorder. By mixing humor with these heavy topics, the show reflected the real struggles of many people.

The characters' personal lives often drove the plot and revealed their inner struggles. Alex Reiger dealt with the anxiety of being the person everyone turned to for advice. He also faced the aftermath of a divorce and was estranged from his father. Bobby Wheeler faced many setbacks, such as being recast in a soap opera pilot after being signed by a manager. Tony Banta struggled with his boxing career, even losing his license at one point due to being knocked out too many times. These realistic character arcs helped the audience connect with the show's central theme of finding meaning in an imperfect world.
