It ran for 11 seasons from September 16, 1993, to May 13, 2004. The show was created by David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee. It functioned as a spin-off of the popular sitcom Cheers. This means it took a character from an older show and gave him a new story. The series focuses on the life of Frasier Crane, a psychiatrist. He moves back to his hometown of Seattle, Washington, to host a radio show.

The story begins when Frasier returns to Seattle after his marriage to Lilith Sternin ends. His new life is complicated when he must take in his father, Martin Crane. Martin is a retired police detective who has mobility issues. He was shot in the hip during a robbery while working. Because of this injury, Martin cannot live alone. Frasier and Martin interview several people to find a caregiver. They eventually hire Daphne Moon, an English immigrant from Manchester. Daphne becomes a live-in aide and a central part of the Crane family. Much of the comedy comes from the friction between Frasier and his father. They have very different personalities and lifestyles.

Frasier’s family and professional life involve several distinct characters. His younger brother, Niles Crane, is also a psychiatrist in private practice. The two brothers share a deep respect for the arts and intellectual pursuits. However, they are also very competitive, which often leads to chaos. Niles is characterized by his extreme anxiety and mysophobia, which is a fear of germs. He is known to wipe down chairs in public before sitting.

Frasier also works closely with Roz Doyle at the KACL radio station. Roz is his producer and is described as direct and sarcastic. While they start as mere colleagues, they develop a close friendship. The show also features Bob "Bulldog" Briscoe, a sports talk show host. He eventually moved from a recurring role to a main character.

The series explores various themes through its characters' daily lives. One major theme is the relationship between the Crane brothers and their father. While they share little in common, their bond strengthens over time. Another theme is the brothers' struggle to navigate high society. They have expensive tastes and often clash with Martin's more laid-back nature. The show also explores personal growth, such as Roz becoming a single mother to her daughter, Alice. Additionally, the series follows Niles's long journey of falling in love with and marrying Daphne. These personal stories provide the emotional core of the comedy.

Frasier achieved massive success and received significant critical acclaim. The series and its cast won 37 Primetime Emmy Awards. At the time, this was a record for any scripted television series. Most impressively, the show won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for five consecutive years. The show was highly regarded in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

The popularity of the show helped establish its lead actors as major stars. For instance, Kelsey Grammer became one of the highest-paid actors on television. Jane Leeves also reached a high level of success as a British actress.

The longevity of the characters is a notable fact of the production. Kelsey Grammer played Frasier Crane for a total of 20 years. This count includes his nine seasons on Cheers and a single appearance on the show Wings. This achievement tied him with James Arness, who played Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke. While that record was later surpassed by animated characters in The Simpsons, it was a major milestone. The show also featured many famous guest stars. These included actors such as Patrick Stewart, Carol Burnett, and James Earl Jones.

Even after the original run ended in 2004, the franchise remained relevant. A revival series, also titled Frasier, premiered on the Paramount+ service. This new version began on October 12, 2023. This shows how the characters and the world of the show continue to interest audiences. The legacy of the series connects to the broader history of American sitcoms. It remains a key example of how a spin-off can build upon the success of a predecessor. The show's ability to blend character-driven comedy with intellectual themes helped define its unique place in television history.
