He is best known for creating animated television series like Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill. His work often explores the humor found in everyday life and social situations. Through animation and live-action films, Judge has shaped modern comedy. He has received high honors for his storytelling. These include a Primetime Emmy Award and two Annie Awards. He also won two Critics' Choice Television Awards and Satellite Awards.

Judge's path to art was not direct. He graduated from the University of California, San Diego, in 1985. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics. After college, he held brief jobs in physics and mechanical engineering. However, he found these scientific roles uninteresting. In 1987, he moved to Silicon Valley to work at a video card company called Parallax Graphics. He stayed for less than three months because he disliked the company culture. He described the people there as "true believers" in something he did not understand. This experience later helped inspire his creative work.

After leaving science, Judge explored music and film. He became a bass player for a touring blues band. He played with Anson Funderburgh's band and appeared on the 1990 album Rack 'Em Up. While living in Texas, he began making animated shorts at home. In 1989, he bought a Bolex 16 mm film camera. This tool allowed him to turn his ideas into moving pictures. His short film, Office Space, was acquired by Comedy Central in 1991. This period of experimentation led him to drop out of school to focus on his career.

Judge's first major success came through animation. In 1992, he created a short film called Frog Baseball. This short introduced the characters Beavis and Butt-Head. These characters moved to the MTV series Beavis and Butt-Head in 1993. The show follows two socially incompetent teenagers in Highland, Texas. Judge voiced both main characters and most of the supporting cast. The series was famous for its lewd humor and social commentary. It even spawned a feature film, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, in 1996. The show returned for a new season in 2011, which drew 3.3 million viewers.

In 1995, Judge began developing King of the Hill. He designed the characters and wrote the pilot script. Because Fox was unsure about a realistic animated comedy, they paired him with writer Greg Daniels. The show debuted in 1997 and focused on the Hill family in Arlen, Texas. It used a naturalistic approach to find humor in mundane, everyday life. The series was a massive success and ran for 13 seasons. It became one of the longest-running animated series in American history. Judge provided the voices for Hank Hill and Jeff Boomhauer.

Judge also mastered live-action filmmaking. He transitioned from drawing to using real cameras and actors. His 1999 film, Office Space, was inspired by his time as an engineer. He used his experiences with office life to create the story. During production, he learned about lenses and camera placement from his crew. He even made a cameo appearance as a restaurant manager named Stan. While the film was not a huge box office hit, it became a cult classic on VHS and DVD. He later directed other films, including Idiocracy and Extract.

His later work continues to explore specific cultural themes. He created the live-action series Silicon Valley for HBO. This show received critical acclaim for its look at technology companies. He also produced Tales from the Tour Bus, a series about the music industry.
