Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport developed the show for the BBC. It features four colorful characters who live in a bright, grassy landscape. These characters are known as the Teletubbies. They are designed to resemble toddlers in their movements and speech. Each character has a unique antenna on their head. They also have television screens located on their bellies. This series became a massive commercial success in Britain and many other countries. It won several BAFTA awards and was nominated for two Daytime Emmys.

The show takes place in a place called Teletubbyland. This landscape is a floral, grassy area filled with rabbits. The main home for the characters is the Tubbytronic Superdome. This is an earth house implanted in the ground. The characters can enter through a hole at the top or a large semicircular door. Inside the dome, the characters interact with various strange contraptions. One such device is the Noo-Noo, an anthropomorphic blue vacuum cleaner. The Noo-Noo acts as a housekeeper but can become a "Naughty Noo-Noo" when it sucks up blankets or toast. Another device is the Voice Trumpets. These are periscopes that rise from the ground to play games or supervise the characters.

There are four main Teletubby characters, each with distinct traits. Tinky Winky is the largest and oldest member of the group. He is purple and has a triangular antenna. He often carries a red bag. Dipsy is the second Teletubby and is green. His antenna looks like a dipstick. The creators noted that Dipsy is Black. Laa-Laa is the third character and is yellow. She has a curly antenna and enjoys singing and dancing. Her favorite toy is an orange rubber ball. Po is the fourth character and is the smallest and youngest. She is red and has an antenna shaped like a bubble wand. Po sometimes speaks Cantonese.

Every episode follows a specific set of rituals. The Teletubbies often watch footage of real children on their belly screens. A magical, whimsical event also occurs once per episode. These events are often strange and happen without a clear cause. The episodes begin and end with the Sun Baby. The Sun Baby acts as a wake-up call for the characters. As the show ends, the Voice Trumpets and a narrator speak to the viewers. The Teletubbies then say goodbye and return to the Tubbytronic Superdome as the Sun Baby sets.

Andrew Davenport and Anne Wood created the show for a specific reason. Davenport was interested in the Apollo 11 moon landing and astronauts. They wanted to address how children reacted to new technology in the late 1990s. The show's colorful, psychedelic setting was designed to capture infant attention. It also aimed to educate children about life transitions. To find a location, they needed a place with a bowl-like dip. They eventually chose a farm in Wimpstone, Warwickshire. This location became so famous that people began trespassing on the land. In 2013, the owner turned the filming site into a pond to stop the crowds.

The show's popularity led to incredible financial success. By October 2000, the franchise generated over £1 billion in merchandise sales. In 1997, Teletubby dolls were the top-selling Christmas toy in Britain. Demand was so high that some shops had to ration them to one per customer. Some people even camped outside stores overnight to buy them. It stayed in the Top 75 for 32 weeks and sold over a million copies.

Teletubbies has reached a global audience in many ways. The show has aired in over 120 countries and 45 different languages. In the United States, it has aired on PBS Kids and the Nick Jr. Channel. Although the original run ended in 2001, the show was rebooted in 2014. This new version ran for 120 episodes. The reboot also introduced new characters called Tiddlytubbies. These are baby Teletubbies with names like Mi-Mi and Daa Daa. The series continues to be a major part of children's media worldwide.
