He is best known for co-creating the iconic cat and mouse characters, Tom and Jerry. Along with his longtime partner, Joseph Barbera, he founded the legendary Hanna-Barbera animation studio. This company became a powerhouse in the television industry. Their work helped define the look and feel of animated storytelling for generations. Hanna's career spanned many decades and transformed how cartoons were produced and shared globally.

The process of creating animation required a specific blend of artistic and technical skills. Hanna possessed a unique gift for timing and story construction. He was also skilled at recruiting top-tier artists to bring visions to life. While Barbera focused on gag writing and sketch artistry, Hanna managed the larger production elements. He even provided the essential vocal effects for the title characters of Tom and Jerry. Furthermore, his musical background allowed him to help write songs, including the theme for The Flintstones.

Animation production involves several distinct stages and roles. In his early career, Hanna led the ink and paint department. This role involved the meticulous task of applying color to hand-drawn frames. As he progressed, he moved into directing, first with the series To Spring in 1936. Later, he and Barbera functioned as a specialized team. They balanced different strengths to create successful series. This partnership lasted for over sixty years, surviving many changes in the film and television industries.

Hanna's journey began in Melrose, New Mexico Territory, on July 14, 1910. His family moved frequently because his father worked on railroads and dams. This nomadic lifestyle took him through Oregon, Utah, and California. He studied journalism and structural engineering at Compton City College. However, the onset of the Great Depression forced him to leave his studies. He worked various jobs, including at a car wash, before entering the animation field in 1930 at the Harman and Ising studio.

The success of Hanna and Barbera's work is measurable by impressive figures. Their Tom and Jerry series won seven Academy Awards out of 13 total nominations. This is a record for any character-based theatrical animated series. In the 1960s, Hanna-Barbera Productions reached a massive global audience. Their shows were watched by over 300 million people during their peak. Additionally, their cartoons were translated into more than 28 different languages to reach viewers worldwide.

Many notable characters emerged from the Hanna-Barbera studio. They produced The Flintstones, which was the first animated prime-time hit. Other famous programs included The Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, The Smurfs, and Yogi Bear. They also created shows like The Huckleberry Hound Show and Jonny Quest. These characters became cultural icons, appearing in books, films, and toys. Even the catchphrase "yabba dabba doo" from Fred Flintstone became part of everyday language.

Hanna's life also connected to broader social and personal interests. He was a dedicated member of the Boy Scouts of America. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and later served as a Scoutmaster. In 1985, he received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. Interestingly, he noted this was the achievement he felt most proud of. Beyond animation, he enjoyed sailing and singing in a barbershop quartet. He remained married to his wife, Violet, for over 64 years until his death in 2001.
