Alan and John pilot the space vehicle, Thunderbird 3. Gordon Tracy pilots the submersible, Thunderbird 4. Finally, John and Alan man Thunderbird 5, a space station. A scientist named Brains designed all these advanced machines.

The idea for the show came from a real event. In October 1963, a dam collapsed in Lengede, Germany. This accident flooded an iron mine and trapped 50 men. It took eight hours to bring a heavy drill to the site. Gerry Anderson wanted to show a faster way to help. He imagined a group that could respond to emergencies instantly. This led to the creation of the International Rescue concept. He wanted the stories to appeal to both children and adults.

The creators used many talented actors for the voices. Most characters were given American accents to help the show succeed in the United States. For example, David Holliday was the only American actor in the main cast. He voiced the character Virgil Tracy. Other actors like David Graham and Ray Barrett provided many voices.
