The tabasco pepper is a special type of chili. It belongs to a group called Capsicum frutescens. This plant comes from Mexico. Most people know it because of Tabasco sauce. It is also used to make peppered vinegar. These peppers are quite spicy for many people. They rate between 30,000 and 50,000 on the Scoville scale. This scale is how we measure heat.

Growing these peppers follows a clear path. First, the seeds need a lot of warmth to sprout. They grow best in warm soil. The plant grows into a bushy shape. It can even grow quite tall. The peppers start as pale yellowish-green fruits. Next, they turn yellow and then orange. Finally, they ripen into a bright red color. This whole way it works takes about 80 days.

History shows that these plants faced hard jobs. In the 1960s, a virus hit the pepper stock. This was called the tobacco mosaic virus. It hurt many of the plants. People had to find a way to fix this. Around 1970, they grew a new variety. It was named the Greenleaf tabasco. This new kind was resistant to the virus.

There are many specific facts about these plants. The peppers are about 4 cm long. They stay erect instead of hanging down. This means they point up from their stems. They grow best in soil that is slightly acidic. The pH should be between 5.5 and 7.0. Growers also watch the nutrients in the soil. They use phosphorus, potassium, and calcium. They keep nitrogen low to help the fruit grow.

You can think of these peppers like a sunny garden. They love plenty of light and heat. If it is too hot or too cool, they may not grow fruit. They also need a steady supply of water. They like soil that is well-drained. This means water moves through it easily. This helps the plant stay healthy and strong. The name comes from the Mexican state of Tabasco.
