People grow it for its fruit. They usually dry the fruit to use as a spice. It has a taste like black pepper. However, it is sweeter and more pungent. Pungency means it has a very sharp taste. This comes from a compound called piperine.

The fruit looks like a long spike. It looks like a catkin from a hazel tree. This spike holds many tiny fruits. Each small fruit is about the size of a poppy seed.

This plant works in a very interesting way. The fruit grows on a flower spike.

Many minuscule fruits are embedded in the surface. Each tiny fruit contains piperine. This substance is what makes the spice feel hot. Long pepper is native to India. Another kind, Piper retrofractum, comes from Java, Indonesia. Some people confuse these fruits with chili peppers. Chili peppers come from the Americas. They belong to a different group called Capsicum. This shows how different plants can look alike.

Long pepper has a very long history. People in Greece used it in the fifth or sixth century BCE. Hippocrates talked about it as a medicine. Greeks and Romans used it as a common spice.

The ancient writer Theophrastus told the difference between long pepper and black pepper. A Roman named Pliny made a mistake about them. He thought they came from the same plant. Later, black pepper began to compete with long pepper. This change started in the twelfth century. By the fourteenth century, black pepper had displaced it in Europe.

Many big changes happened in the world. The quest for black pepper helped start the Age of Discovery. People wanted cheaper and more dependable sources. Then, explorers found the American continents. They found chili peppers there too. The Spanish called them pimiento. Chili peppers were easier to grow in many places. They were closer to Europe than long pepper. Because of this, long pepper became a rarity in trade. It is not as common in shops today.

Even though it is rare, long pepper is still used. You can find it in Indian and Nepalese vegetable pickles. It is also in some North African spice mixes. It is used in cooking in Indonesia and Malaysia.
