It makes a spicy sauce that many people love. This pepper belongs to a group called Capsicum frutescens. People use it as a seasoning or a marinade. Some people even use it in the pharmaceutical industry. It brings a fiery heat to many different dishes. This heat comes from the pepper itself.

Growing these peppers is a hard job.

The plants are usually very bushy. They grow leaves that are long and wide. The small fruits have a blunt point. They start out green when they are young. When they are ripe, they turn bright red or purple. Some varieties can reach 175,000 Scoville heat units.

This pepper has a long and interesting history. It originally came from plants in the Americas. However, it has grown wild in Africa for centuries. Portuguese explorers helped develop this specific type. They used the malagueta pepper to create it. They did this in former Southern African territories. This happened within the old Portuguese Empire.

Many different names exist for this pepper.

In Swahili, the word pili pili means pepper. The name might come from the Ronga language. Different places use different spellings for it. In Malawi, people might call it peri peri. In Mozambique, the spelling is piri-piri. It is grown in many lands like Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Making the sauce is a way to mix flavors.

People mix the chili with garlic. They often add an oily or acidic base. Some recipes use lemon, onion, or salt. Other cooks add herbs like basil or oregano. The sauce is very popular in Southern Africa. It is also famous in the United Kingdom. A restaurant chain called Nando's helped spread it there.
