People use the fruit as a spice. They often dry it first. It tastes sweet and hot. It is like black pepper. But it is more pungent. Pungent means it has a strong, sharp taste. This taste comes from piperine. Piperine is a compound found in the fruit.

Long ago, this spice was very common. People in Greece used it as medicine. Romans used it as a spice too. Later, black pepper became more popular in Europe. Then, people found chili peppers in the Americas. Chili peppers were easier to grow. Because of this, long pepper became rare.
