This mission is very important for health and safety. It aims to stop open defecation, which means using the bathroom outside. It also works to manage solid waste like trash. The goal is to make sure waste is collected and processed correctly. This helps keep the land and water clean for everyone.

The mission works through many different steps. It focuses on building toilets so people do not have to go outside. It also teaches people how to change their habits. This is called behavior change. The government wants people to understand why sanitation is so important. They also work to improve how cities and villages handle liquid and solid waste.

This way, the cleanliness can last for a long time.

India has tried to improve sanitation for many years. A formal program first started way back in 1954. Later, the government started the Central Rural Sanitation Programme in 1986. In 1999, they launched the Total Sanitation Campaign. This was followed by the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan in 2012. The Swachh Bharat Mission was a new, bigger version of these earlier plans.

It was officially launched on October 2, 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Many big numbers show how much work has been done. During the first phase, about 90 million toilets were built.

This phase lasted until October 2, 2019, which was the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth. The mission is split into two parts: rural and urban. The rural part is called SBM-Gramin. The urban part is called SBM-Urban. Over three million government employees and many students help with the work.

This mission helps India meet big goals set by the United Nations. These are called the Sustainable Development Goals. India reached one of these health targets much faster than expected. In the year 2000, about 73% of people practiced open defecation. By 2024, that number fell to only 7% for the whole country. In cities, the rate dropped to 0% in 2024. This shows how much the mission has changed lives across the land.
