The Sustainable Development Goals are a big plan for the world.

They are often called the SDGs. All members of the United Nations agreed to these goals. The main aim is to find peace and prosperity for people and the planet. This includes fighting climate change and protecting oceans and forests. The goals show how our environment, our society, and our money all connect.

Scientists say these parts of life cannot be separated.

There are 17 different goals in total.

Some goals focus on people, like ending poverty and hunger. Others focus on fairness, such as gender equality and quality education. Some goals help our world stay healthy, like clean water and clean energy. There are also goals for life on land and life below water.

Each goal has its own specific targets to reach. Most goals have between eight and 12 targets to follow.

These goals began with a plan called the 2030 Agenda.

The United Nations presented this vision in 2015. It was meant to be a very bold and big change. The SDGs are different from older plans like the Millennium Development Goals. The older goals only helped developing countries. The new SDGs apply to every single country in the world.

They also used a "bottom up" way to listen to people.

To see if the goals are working, experts use indicators.

An indicator is a tool used to measure progress. As of 2025, there are 234 official indicators in use. These tools help leaders see if things are getting better. For example, they might track how many people live in poverty. Some groups, like the World Bank, help collect this data.

This data must be accurate and told quickly.

Reaching these goals is a very hard job.

Many things make progress difficult right now. Climate change and losing nature are big worries. The COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2023 also caused setbacks. Some areas, like Asia, had a hard time during that time. Also, the world needs a lot of money to finish the work. We must work together to leave no one behind.
