He was the first president of the nation. He served in this role from 1944 until 1952. Sveinn was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on February 27, 1881. His parents were Björn Jónsson and Elísabet Sveinsdóttir. He grew up to be a very smart man. He studied at the Latin School in Reykjavík. Later, he earned a law degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1907.

Sveinn worked in many different jobs before becoming president. He was a lawyer and a public prosecutor in Reykjavík. He also helped lead the city council from 1912 to 1920. He was quite busy starting new things for his country. He helped found a big shipping company called Eimskipafélag Íslands in 1914. He also helped start the Icelandic Red Cross in 1924. These jobs helped him learn how to lead people and organize large groups.

History changed for Iceland during the Second World War. In April 1940, Germany occupied Denmark. This was a problem because the King of Denmark could not help Iceland.

Because of this, Sveinn became the Regent of Iceland. A regent is a person who does the King's job. He served as Regent three times between 1941 and 1943. During this time, United States troops arrived in Iceland.

In 1944, Iceland became a republic. This meant it was a new kind of independent country. The Althing, which is the Icelandic parliament, chose Sveinn as the first president. He was very serious about doing his job correctly. He even asked for books on diplomatic protocol. Protocol is a set of rules for how leaders should act. He wanted to make sure he followed every right custom with other countries. He was re-elected as president in 1945 and again in 1949.

Sveinn's time as leader saw many big changes. Iceland joined NATO on March 30, 1949. This caused some arguments and riots in the country. Later, a defense agreement was signed with the United States in 1951. Sveinn had some health problems starting in 1949. He died in Reykjavík in January 1952. He was still serving as president when he passed away. He is the only president in Iceland's history to die while in office.
