Bjarni Herjólfsson

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bjarni Herjólfsson was a famous explorer from Iceland. He lived during the 10th century. He was a merchant captain based in Norway. He often visited his father in Iceland during the summer. People believe he was the first European to see the mainland of the Americas. His story is a big part of history.

In the year 986, Bjarni went on a special trip. He sailed to Iceland to visit his parents. He found that his father had moved to Greenland. Bjarni wanted to find him, so he took a crew. A big storm blew his ship off course. He did not have a map or a compass to help him.

While lost, Bjarni saw a new land. It was not the Greenland he knew. This land had mountains and many trees. His crew begged him to stop and look around. Bjarni said no because he wanted to find his father. He saw low hills with forests far to the west. He kept sailing until he reached Greenland.

Bjarni settled in a place called Herjolfsnes with his father. He told people about the wooded land he saw. At first, not many people cared about his news. Later, people in Greenland became very interested. They did not have much timber for building. They wanted the wood from the new land.

Bjarni's voyage changed things for other explorers. Leif Erikson heard the stories of the new land. Leif bought the same ship that Bjarni had used. He hired a crew of 35 people. They went to find the land Bjarni saw. This led to the first Viking homes in America. Some think Bjarni saw Newfoundland, Labrador, or Baffin Island.
