He arrived with his wife, Hallveig Fróðadóttir. He also traveled with his foster brother, Hjǫrleifr Hróðmarsson. People call him the first Icelander because of his journey. His story helps us understand how people first lived there.

How did he find his new home? The story is quite interesting. Ingólfr came from a place called Rivedal in Norway. He heard about a new island in the Atlantic Ocean. To find a spot, he threw high seat pillars into the sea. He promised to settle where the gods brought the wood. Two of his slaves searched the coasts for three years. They finally found the pillars in a small bay.

This bay became the city of Reykjavík.

There is much history about this time. A writer named Ari Þorgilsson wrote about these events. He said Irish monks were in Iceland before the Norsemen. However, the monks left because they did not want to live near the Norse pagans. The Book of Settlements tells more stories about Ingólfr. It was written two or three centuries after he arrived. This book says he left Norway because of a blood feud.

Many specific details are tied to his name. He is said to have settled much of southwestern Iceland. During his trip, his brother Hjǫrleifr was killed by Irish slaves. Ingólfr went to the Westman Islands to find them. He killed the men there. Because of this, the islands got the name Westman Islands. The Norsemen used the word "vestmenn" for the Irish people.

Ingólfr's family continued to be important to Iceland. His son was named Þórsteinn Ingólfsson. Þórsteinn was a major chieftain in the land. He is said to have founded the first parliament. This was a forerunner to the Althingi. Today, we remember Ingólfr with art. A statue by Einar Jónsson stands in Reykjavík.
