Heimskringla is a famous collection of old stories called sagas.

These tales tell of Swedish and Norwegian kings. The title comes from the first two words of the first saga. It means "the circle of the world." Many scholars believe an Icelandic poet named Snorri Sturluson wrote it. He lived from about 1178 to 1241. This work is very important for understanding Scandinavian history. It shows how people lived and how their kingdoms grew.

The stories follow a specific path through time. They begin with the Ynglings, a legendary royal family. These early tales are rooted in Norse mythology. They trace a line back to gods like Odin and Freyr. As the book continues, the stories become more about real history. They move from myths to accounts of actual rulers. Most of the sagas focus on individual kings. This way, the reader can follow the life of each leader.

To write these stories, the author used many different sources. He used older kings' sagas like Morkinskinna and Fagrskinna. He also looked at 12th-century Norwegian histories. Some of these sources, like the work called Hryggjarstykki, are now lost. He even used skaldic poems, which were verses passed down by mouth. These poems were often composed during the actual events. By mixing written texts with spoken traditions, the author built a massive epic.

Many specific kings are featured in these pages. One major part is the saga of Olaf II. He was a saint who ruled Norway for fifteen years. Another famous story is about Harald Hardrada. He traveled to places like Constantinople and Syria. He even fought in England at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066. The collection also includes the saga of Sigurd the Crusader. This story follows a fleet that traveled as far as Palestine.

Today, historians look at Heimskringla with great care. Some believe the stories are not perfectly factual. This is because they were written long after the kings lived. However, the sagas still help us learn about medieval politics. They have also inspired other famous writers. For example, Jules Verne mentioned the work in his book Journey to the Center of the Earth. Even though times change, these old stories still hold great value.
