history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bjarni Herjólfsson was an explorer from Iceland. He lived a long time ago. He was a sea captain. In the year 986, he went on a big trip. He wanted to find his father. A storm blew his ship off course. He saw land that was not Greenland. This land had many mountains and trees. His crew wanted to stop and look. Bjarni said no. He wanted to reach his home instead. He saw hills with forests far to the west. Bjarni did not land there. He went to Greenland to see his family. He told people about the woods he saw. People in Greenland liked this news. They needed wood for building. Later, Leif Erikson heard these stories. Leif bought the same ship Bjarni used. He took 35 people with him. Leif went to find the new land. This led to the first Viking homes in America. Some think Bjarni saw places like Newfoundland or Labrador. He was a famous man for his discovery. But some people also teased him. They said he should have looked closer at the land.
