As a young man, he studied at an American Methodist school. He learned English and became a Christian there. Rhee also became an activist for Korean independence. This work led to him being sent to prison in 1899. While in prison, he even wrote books and dictionaries.

After he was released, Rhee moved to the United States. He lived in places like Hawaii and Washington, D.C.

He led the nation during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. This war started when North Korea invaded South Korea. Rhee had very strong views about communism. He also worked closely with the United States. After the war, the economy was quite small. South Korea relied on aid from the U.S. to help its people.

Eventually, many people in South Korea became unhappy. They felt Rhee had too much power over the government. In 1960, students led a movement called the April Revolution. Protests grew after a disputed election in March 1960. People were angry about how the vote was handled. Because of these protests, Rhee resigned from his office. He moved to Hawaii to live out his final years. He died there in 1965 after a stroke.
