A geyser is a hot spring that shoots water up.

It sits in the Haukadalur valley.

This area has many hot spots.

You can find mud pools and steam vents there.

One other geyser is nearby.

Its name is Geysir.

Strokkur is very reliable.

It erupts every 6 to 10 minutes.

Most eruptions reach 15 to 40 meters high.

Sometimes it can shoot up to 150 meters.

An earthquake helped it start in 1789.

It unblocked the conduit.

A conduit is a pipe or passage.

An earthquake blocked it again later.

This happened near the turn of the 20th century.

In 1963, people cleaned out the passage.

They did this from the bottom of the basin.

Now, it erupts all the time.

Many tourists come to see it.

They want to watch the water burst.

It is one of the few geysers that is so steady.
