earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A geyser is a special hot spring. It shoots hot water and steam into the air in bursts.

Geysers are rare. They need three things to work. They need heat, water, and a special path underground.

Most geysers are near volcanoes. This is because magma, or melted rock, is close to the surface.

Surface water seeps deep into the ground. It hits hot rocks. This makes the water very hot.

In a geyser, the underground path has narrow parts. These parts act like a lid on a pressure cooker. The narrow path traps the heat. This builds up high pressure. Eventually, the water boils and turns into steam. The steam pushes the hot water up through a vent.

There are two main types. Fountain geysers erupt from pools. Cone geysers erupt from mounds of rock.

Some geysers are even found in space! Moons like Enceladus have jets of water vapor. These are called cryogeysers.
