It sits in the southwest part of Iceland. The geyser is near the Hvítá River. It is located in the Haukadalur valley area. This area has many other hot features. You can see mud pools and steam vents there. One famous geyser named Geysir is just to the north.

Strokkur is famous because it is very steady. It erupts every 6 to 10 minutes. Most eruptions reach 15 to 40 meters high. Sometimes the water shoots up to 150 meters. This makes it a very exciting sight to see.

Watching a geyser work is quite a wonder. The water moves through a conduit. A conduit is a pipe or passage underground.

The water builds up pressure in this path. Then the water bursts out of the ground. The whole eruption lasts about two seconds. Each frame of the event is 1/4 of a second apart. It is a fast and powerful thing to watch. The water travels high into the air before falling back down. This cycle happens over and over again.

People first wrote about Strokkur in 1789. An earthquake helped to unblock its conduit.

Its activity changed a lot during the 1800s. In 1815, the height was about 150 meters. The geyser erupted until the turn of the 20th century. Then another earthquake blocked the conduit again. This stopped the geyser from erupting for a long time. It stayed quiet until people took action. This history shows how the earth can change.

In 1963, the geyser began to work again. The Geysir Committee gave some good advice.

Local people cleaned out the blocked conduit. They did this through the bottom of the basin. Now the geyser erupts regularly. It is a very reliable natural wonder. Many tourists travel to Iceland to see it. They hope to catch a perfect eruption. It is one of the few geysers that is so predictable.

Strokkur is like a giant, natural water fountain.

Most people only see fountains in parks. This one is made by the heat of the earth. It is part of the West Volcanic Zone. You might know other geysers like Old Faithful. Old Faithful is also very steady and predictable. Both geysers show us how much energy is underground. The world has many amazing ways of moving water. Strokkur is a great example of this power.
