Cloudburst

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A cloudburst is a massive amount of rain that falls in a very short time. These events can dump huge amounts of water in less than five minutes. For example, 25 mm of rain can fall on just one square kilometre. This is equal to 25,000 metric tons of water hitting the ground. Such a sudden downpour often creates dangerous flash floods. Sometimes, these heavy rains also bring hail and loud thunder.

There are a few ways these sudden storms work. One way is called orographic lift, which happens when air is pushed up by mountains. Another way is when warm air mixes with cooler air, causing sudden condensation. This is when water vapor turns into liquid droplets very quickly. Large droplets can also grow fast through the Langmuir precipitation process. In this process, big drops grow by joining with smaller ones as they fall.

People have different ideas about what a cloudburst is. The name comes from an old idea that clouds were like water balloons. People thought they could simply burst and spill their water. We now know this idea is not true, but the name stayed. In India, a cloudburst is defined as rain at a certain rate per hour. The Swedish weather service uses a different rule for their term, skyfall.

Predicting these storms is a very hard job for scientists. Satellites help find large weather systems, but they often miss cloudbursts. This is because the storms are often smaller than the satellite can see. Weather models also struggle to simulate these clouds with high detail. In hilly areas, it is even harder to forecast the rain. This is due to how moisture and mountains interact in the sky.

Cloudbursts have caused many big changes in different places. In 1908, the Musi River in India rose 3.4 meters during a storm. In 1970, a cloudburst in the Alaknanda valley moved 15.9 million tonnes of sediment. In 2010, a series of cloudbursts in Leh, Ladakh, affected many people. Some of the shortest recorded cloudbursts lasted only one minute in Guadeloupe. Other long ones, like in La Réunion, lasted for 24 hours.
