Steamboat Geyser is the tallest active geyser in the world.

It sits in the Norris Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. This amazing feature has two separate vents. The north vent is responsible for the tallest columns of water. The south vent produces shorter water columns. It is a truly massive display of nature. No other active geyser reaches these heights regularly.

How does the geyser work during a big event? A major eruption usually lasts between 3 and 40 minutes. Some eruptions have even lasted longer than one hour. During these times, water can shoot more than 300 feet into the air. After the water stops, the geyser vents powerful jets of steam. This steam can continue for up to 48 hours. Sometimes, water returns to the vent and causes smaller jets of water.

History shows that Steamboat does not follow a predictable schedule. The time between big eruptions can range from three days to fifty years. The geyser was dormant from 1911 until 1961. In 1964, it set a record with 29 eruptions in one year. A new record was set during a very active period starting in 2018. In 2019 and 2020, the geyser had 48 eruptions each year.

Many interesting numbers come from watching this geyser. On August 27, 2019, an eruption reached 403 feet in height. A Park ranger measured another eruption at 355 feet in 2020. That same year, another eruption reached 375 feet. Since 2018, the geyser has had many major eruptions. There were 165 major eruptions recorded between March 2018 and May 2023. The most recent eruption occurred on April 14, 2025.

Steamboat Geyser is part of a larger world of hot water. Nearby, a place called Cistern Spring will drain completely after a major eruption. This spring takes a few days to refill. Other geysers like Excelsior and Semi-Centennial once reached similar heights. However, those geysers are now different or dormant. Steamboat remains a unique and powerful part of the Yellowstone landscape. It reminds us how much the Earth is still changing.
