Since the year 1210, Hekla has erupted over 20 times. Some eruptions are very big. They can even cool the Earth. A huge eruption called Hekla 3 threw out much rock. This ash reached as far as Scotland and Ireland.

When Hekla erupts, it lets out tephra. Tephra is bits of rock and ash. This ash can be bad for animals. It has a lot of fluorine, which is a poison.

Long ago, people had scary stories about this place. They called it the "Gateway to Hell." This idea spread across Europe. In the 1300s, people saw birds in the fire. They thought the birds were souls. Hekla is still a very important volcano to study today. The most recent eruption was in the year 2000.
