Old Faithful

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Old Faithful is a famous geyser. A geyser is a hot spring that shoots water. It is in Yellowstone National Park. This park is in Wyoming.

People named it in 1870. It was the first geyser in the park to get a name. Old Faithful is very predictable. This means you can guess when it will erupt. It shoots boiling water into the air. The spray can last for 5 minutes.

It erupts about every 92 minutes on average. The time between pops can change. It might wait only 35 minutes. It might wait as long as 120 minutes. Scientists use probes to study it. A probe is a tool used to measure things. They lowered tools deep into the ground. They used video to see inside. They saw hot steam and fog. They saw water fill the pipes underground. Earthquakes can change how it works. An earthquake in 1983 made the waits longer. Old Faithful is not the largest geyser. Steamboat Geyser is the largest in the park.
