Old Faithful

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Old Faithful is a famous cone geyser located in Yellowstone National Park. It sits within the Upper Geyser Basin in Wyoming, United States. This geothermal feature is world-renowned because it is highly predictable. Most geysers are difficult to time, but Old Faithful follows a reliable pattern. It erupts on average every 92 minutes. This consistency makes it a major attraction in the Old Faithful Historic District. The nearby Old Faithful Inn is also part of this historic area.

Scientists have studied the mechanism of this geyser using specialized equipment. Between 1983 and 1994, researchers lowered probes into the ground. These probes contained video equipment and devices to measure pressure and temperature. They reached depths as deep as 150 feet. The probes allowed experts to observe the conduit, which is the underground pipe or channel. Inside the conduit, researchers saw water entering through a recharge process. They also observed superheated steam entering the system at temperatures as high as 200 degrees Celsius.

Several distinct processes occur deep underground during an eruption cycle. One process is the recharge of water into the conduit. As water enters, it expands from below. Another process involves the mixing of different air temperatures. Cool air from above mixes with heated air from below. This interaction causes fog to form inside the conduit. The eruptions themselves can shoot boiling water into the air. These bursts of water can last anywhere from 1.5 to 5 minutes.

Old Faithful has a long history of human observation. It was named in 1870 during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition. Members of this group traveled down the Firehole River from the Kepler Cascades. They were the first to see the geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin. Nathaniel P. Langford wrote about the expedition in his 1871 account. In the early days of the park, people even used the geyser for laundry. Since then, more than 1,000,000 eruptions have been recorded.

Mathematical patterns help us understand the timing of the eruptions. In 1938, Harry Woodward described a relationship between eruption duration and the intervals between them. The interval between eruptions follows a bimodal distribution. This means there are two common patterns for the waiting time. If an eruption lasts less than 2.5 minutes, the next one usually occurs about 65 minutes later. If the eruption lasts more than 2.5 minutes, the interval increases to about 91 minutes. These timings are accurate within a margin of error of plus or minus 10 minutes.

Environmental changes can affect how the geyser behaves over time. Earthquakes can influence subterranean water levels and change eruption patterns. For example, the Borah Peak earthquake in Idaho occurred in October 1983. After this event, the eruption intervals for Old Faithful became noticeably longer. In 1939, the average interval between eruptions was 66.5 minutes. Since the year 2000, the average interval has slowly increased to about 90 minutes. Interestingly, these disruptions have actually made the geyser more predictable in some ways.

It is important to note that Old Faithful is not the largest geyser. Steamboat Geyser is the largest in Yellowstone National Park. Steamboat is also much less predictable than Old Faithful. Old Faithful remains reliable because it is not connected to other thermal features in the basin. This isolation helps maintain its steady rhythm. While other geysers like Waimangu Geyser have become extinct, Old Faithful continues to erupt. It remains a central part of the geothermal system in Wyoming.
