It is different from professional games because it has less formal structure. This freedom lets players show off their unique individual skills. It is a big part of urban culture in many cities. People use it to build community and express their neighborhood identity. It is very popular in New York City and Los Angeles. Many cities even host large weekend tournaments like Hoop-It-Up.

Most streetball games happen on a half court. Many players enjoy a three-on-three format. Since there are no referees, players must call their own fouls. A player shouts "Foul!" to stop the play and get the ball. To start play, players use a "checking" system. An offensive player throws the ball to a defender. The defender then throws it back to begin the game. Some games use a "make it, take it" rule. This means the team that scores keeps the ball for offense.

Streetball has a rich history in many places. In New York City, Holcombe Rucker created a famous league. This area was later named Rucker Park to honor him. Streetball has also spread to many other countries. In the Philippines, many streets have their own basketball courts. People there hold tournaments during the summer and holidays. These games use different age groups like Mosquito and Midget. The Senior division is for players aged 26 and up.

There are many fun ways to play the game. One popular version is called 21. In this game, players try to reach exactly 21 points. It is a very challenging game for shooters. You might have to face several defenders at once. Another game is called H-O-R-S-E. In H-O-R-S-E, one player chooses a special shot. Every other player must try to copy that exact shot. If a player misses, they receive a letter. These games make streetball very social and exciting.

Streetball is a global phenomenon seen in many media forms. You can see it in films and television shows. Shows like ESPN's City Slam show the game to many people. Traveling tours like the AND1 Mixtape Tour also share the skill. In France, the Quai 54 tournament is a huge event. It happens every summer and is one of the biggest in the world. Whether on asphalt or in a tournament, streetball connects people. It turns a simple court into a place for skill and joy.
