Skaters look for urban spots like streets, plazas, or industrial areas. They use everyday objects as obstacles for their tricks. These items can include handrails, stairs, walls, or even park benches. Some skaters might use flower beds, bins, or picnic tables too. A skater might perform many tricks in a row. This series of consecutive tricks is called a "line."

Learning to skate involves many specific steps and moves. Almost all tricks require a "pop" from the board's kicktails. This pop helps the board jump into the air. The most basic trick is called an ollie. Once a skater learns the ollie, they can try others. These include the 180, the pop shuv-it, and the kickflip. Skaters also practice grinds and slides on various surfaces. They often use a block of wax on masonry. This wax helps reduce friction so the board slides smoothly.

Street skateboarding changed a lot during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Instead of using swimming pools, skaters moved into urban areas. In Philadelphia, LOVE Park became a famous spot for skaters. A new type of deck with a kicktail at each end became popular. Skate shops began to appear in many cities around the world. These shops became special places for the skate culture to grow. Skaters could visit them to buy gear or watch new videos.

Building a professional skateboard requires many different parts.

The deck is usually made of seven layers of Canadian maple. This wood is often called "Hard rock Canadian Maple." The trucks are the metal axles that hold the wheels. They are bolted to the deck with four nuts and bolts. Skaters use a central nut called a kingpin to adjust turning. Wheels are made of a material called polyurethane. Most street wheels are between 48 mm and 62 mm wide. A common professional setup uses 52 mm wide wheels.

Skating is a way for people to show their own style.

Skill is often judged by how clean a trick looks. Judges also look at how high a skater jumps. They check the speed and the length of a grind. Some skaters, like Tom Penny, are famous for being very smooth. Many professional skaters even design their own special shoes. Famous names like Eric Koston and Daewon Song have their own models. These shoes are built to be very tough and durable.
