People often call him the "godfather of modern street skating." This is because he invented many of the tricks people use today. He was a master of freestyle skateboarding, which is doing tricks on flat ground. He also helped create the style of street skating. Street skating uses things like curbs and rails as obstacles. Mullen's skill and new ideas changed the sport forever. He showed the world how much a skater could do on flat ground.

One of his most important inventions was the flatground ollie. Before this, a skater named Alan Gelfand used a move called an ollie on walls or pools. Mullen figured out how to do this on flat ground. He realized it was like a see-saw motion. A skater pops the tail of the board against the ground. Then, they drag their foot upward to level the board out.

This move lets the board jump into the air. It allows skaters to jump onto rails or over obstacles.

Rodney's journey started in Gainesville, Florida. He grew up on a farm in the country. Because there was not much cement nearby, he practiced in his family garage. He began skateboarding on New Year's Day in 1977. Even as a child, he had amazing control with his feet. He was very dedicated and practiced for many hours every day. He even won his first world freestyle championship when he was only 14 years old. He went on to win 34 out of 35 contests over the next decade.

Throughout his career, Mullen joined many famous teams. He was a member of the Bones Brigade, which was sponsored by Powell Peralta. Later, he helped start a company called World Industries with his friend Steve Rocco. This was the first company owned by professional skateboarders. In 1991, he joined a team called Plan B Skateboards.

While at Plan B, he moved from freestyle to street skating. He showed this change in a video called Questionable. He used his freestyle skills to master new street moves.

Rodney Mullen did more than just jump; he made the board spin. He invented many "flip tricks" that are now essential for all skaters. These include the kickflip, the heelflip, the impossible, and the 360-kickflip. He also created moves like the darkslide and the Casper slide. His tricks are the building blocks for both street and vert skating. Even though he was sometimes shy, his influence is seen everywhere. Every time you see a skater perform a flip, you are seeing his legacy.
